Dennis Barrett


Dennis D. Barrett joined the firm in 2016 and was elevated to partner in 2022. He has 15 years of experience representing both non-profit and for-profit entities on a wide range of transactional and regulatory matters. 

Dennis has represented Section 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) nonprofit organizations in all phases of their life cycles, from helping to form entities and obtain tax exemption from the IRS, to supporting all aspects of their operations and, when necessary, representing entities in dissolution proceedings. Dennis’s nonprofit experience has included working with 501(c)(3) health care and disease nonprofit organizations on a variety of matters, including venture philanthropy transactions and similar mission related investments with pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, developing patient registries, drafting clinical trial and research agreements, and negotiating grant funding agreements. He has served as outside general counsel to multiple clients, working on matters ranging from joint ventures and service contracts to employment matters, governance issues and fiscal sponsorship arrangements. 

Dennis’s experience in the health care sector includes representing clients in mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, contract negotiations, licensing issues, and compliance matters with state and federal regulations. He has also advised physicians and surgeons in negotiating employment contracts as well as in arbitration proceedings. 

Dennis began his career as an associate in the finance group of Bryan Cave, LLP in New York City and later practiced as a healthcare attorney at Garfunkel Wild in New York and McCarter & English, LLP in Newark, NJ. During this time period, he counseled a hospital system on a merger that created the largest health care system in New Jersey, advised one of the nation’s largest home care systems on a joint venture with a large health care system, represented financial institutions negotiating nine and ten figure loan agreements, and provided regulatory guidance to clients ranging from large health care systems to individual physicians with respect to state and federal health care regulations. 

Prior to starting his career in private practice, Dennis served as a fellow at the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice in Newark, NJ as well as a UVA Law South Africa Human Rights Summer Fellow at the Centre for Applied Legal Studies in Johannesburg, South Africa. 

Dennis is a graduate of the University of Virginia School of Law and a magna cum laude graduate of the University of Notre Dame, where he was a member of the College of Arts and Letters Honors Program.
